Here's some information on Merredin!
So exactly where is Merredin????
How many people live here????
- 3800 !!!! Although Merredin in the biggest town between
Perth and Kalgoorlie and provides service to people
within a 150km radius.
What does the town of Merredin look like????
What does the countryside look like????
Does it all look like that???
- Well, most of it does, although there are a few salt
lakes around. This one is called Lake Baandee and the
locals use it for water skiing and sailing!
- There are also some smaller lakes around. They turn a
strange green colour as they dry up!!!!
Why is Merredin here????
- Merredin was originally settled in 1889. It started as a
bush shanty used by gold prospectors on their way from
Perth to the Eastern goldfields. In 1893 the railway line
to the goldfields made it to Merredin. Around the same
time settlement of farmland began. During World War Two
the First Australian General Field Hospital was
established in Merredin. There are also bunkers designed
to house senior military personnel in the event of a
Japanese attack on Perth. These bunkers can still be
seen. Today the town is known for wheat, wool and raising
pigs.
So what's in all those paddocks????
- Merredin is known as the 'Heart of the Wheatbelt'. Mainly
because we are right in the middle of it!!! The paddocks
at the top of this picture have just been harvested and
the ones at the bottom are waiting.
What else is Merredin famous for????
- Four years ago, one house owner dressed up his house with
Christmas lights and decorations. Last year there was a
competition for both private houses and businesses. Here
are some of the results of the competition!!!!

Merredin????

of the Corrigin tractor pull championships, a place
called Frog Rock, the more famous Wave Rock and the train
accident that occurred here late last year.
